The design of the National Museum was based around postmodern ideas. The whole building has been designed to make up several individual spaces, which come together like a puzzle and form kind of a circle around the garden of dreams. The postmodern movement, consists of art which is quite diverse and can be culturally specific, unlike the modernism movement which was more for artistic abstraction and popular culture. The NMA and the Garden of Dreams can both be considered postmodern designs, as they both relate heavily to Australian culture and heritage, for example with colour, textures and shapes.
The Garden of Australian Dreams has been designed on a slice of central Australia. It consists of a map on top of water and includes the word ‘home’ in one hundred different languages. Postmodernism is also used as a medium for social commentary and I think the Garden of Australian Dreams is a good example of this. Australia is a very multicultural country and proud to be one. The GOAD consists of the word ‘home’ in many different languages and I think this is a perfect representation.
